I'm a big fan of FromSoft games, but DS2 and DeS are the two (of the modern one's obviously) that I haven't played.
Every time I've seen people talk about DS2 it's either been "this is the worst game ever made and I never wanna even hear about it" or "this is the best game ever made and needs to be talked about more"
Now, I finally started it, and, I don't get it lol. I really don't get the discourse and strong feelings around it at all

It's just, a decent FromSoft game. I haven't gotten, like, super far. I'm on my way to get the second of those big souls while also doing all the optional stuff I come across. And, it's fun. It's got some cool ideas, cool areas and the combat honestly feels pretty nice despite all the complaints I've heard about it. Some of the cool stuff isn't very well executed, and the bosses are ridiculously easy which is boring, but, idk. I don't get why people have so strong feelings about it

DS2 felt a *little* different, but... yeah, it really is just more Souls. Every time I hear "it's a terrible game", I just feel like I'm hearing from someone that has a small scope of reference.

But I also enjoyed Evergrace and Lords Of The Fallen, so my standards aren't high by any means.

>>932725>>932726 Standards high or not though, it really is just that though. Like, they just did the DeS/DS1 thing but slightly different (which is what basically all their games is) and the new ideas just didn't hit as hard as the changes in Bloodborne and DS3. So it's just a normal ass souls game lol

>>932711 A lot of people went into DS2 when it came out expecting it to be exactly the same as DS1, and got mad when it wasn't what they wanted. Honestly a lot of the shit they did there should be brought back, but Miyazaki's a dipshit and even when he does bring things back from it he fucks it up. That said don't play the Scholar edition, that one's royally fucked up and an overall worse experience.

>>933004 Agreed. It really does seem like that. Scholar is the one I'm playing though lol

>>933008 Damn shame then. The enemy placements they changed are generally worse and make for a much more frustrating experience, and some don't even make any fucking sense. They didn't even make the event items available when they put it out either, fucking asshats.

>>933015 I have yet to find anything that's genuinely annoying but I can see how if it's better in the original it would be annoying to have played that and then switch to a version with worse placements. For me I really don't get the whole "bad enemy placements" thing yet though. It's a complaint I've heard so much but not encountered yet. Maybe it'll be noticeable later though, idk. I think I'm still just early/mid game, not counting DLC.

I found the placements to be a bit more difficult in SotFS, and appreciated it. DS2 was definitely the easiest game in the series to me, so the challenge made it an improvement more than a frustration in my eyes.

>>933004 that might be why I hate it I bought scholar of the first sin because I thought it was just game plus dlc with a graphical update or something but found out later it's more than just that

I didn't like ds2 for lots of reasons the biggest being the movement just feels bad like your walking though molasses whenever you try to turn, and I frames being a skill you have to level made me sad

>>933253 I didn't even realize that's what that stat did but you right. That's crazy. I frames being a stat is hilarious

>>933171 to add to this thought iirc item durability was bugged on PC (anything at 60fps?) where everything did double durability damage, sotfs "fixed" this by making double damage the norm so effectively halved durability

I kinda take it the same way I do the Xenoblade games. Xenoblade 2 isn't the worst game ever or anything like that, but I didn't care for a lot of the mechanics and I found the game to be weaker overall compared to the likes of 1 or even 3.
I have other complaints too, but I think that's also how people feel about Dark Souls 2, it's just not what most people want as much out of the Dark Souls experience. Another example would be the prequels of Star Wars compared to 4, 5, and 6.

>>933290 There's a bug in the original version of Dark Souls II, where hitting a dead body will deal double durability damage. It's not really a big deal.

>>933567 Oh that's a lot less interesting lol

It's for better and worse (mostly worse) not a Miyazaki game and doesn't have a lot of the strong identity and focus on world design that the other Souls(borne/sekiro/Elden ring) game have.
There's a few other kinda iffy design decisions but SoTFS fixed most of those as well as doing some *heavy* regluing of the lore. ADP will never not be BS though.

DS2 original is good game - so much locations, interesting NPCs, Majula and firekeeper's music. Scholar is a bit more challenging and cramped with enemies, actually I liked original a bit better, it was more calm and hasteless playthrough.

It's odd, I always felt that this one is the hardest of the trilogy, and yet the SL1 run in DS2 was far easier than in DS3.

I couldn't bear to finish DS2, one step forward two steps back from its predecessor. Very lazy soundtrack overall too, just made me not want to play it more
