I want to get a feel of the biggest VN series and I'd rather play whichever's the better game first
Already played the mainstream VNs like AA/DR/ZE/Raging Loop/etc. and I lean towards mystery/thriller plots

Higurashi is the better game in my opinion. I have a friend that is a huge VN nerd and he 100% agrees. Personally, however, and he disagrees on this, I prefer the original anime rather than reading it.

Bit polarizing. Higurashi has the better of it in terms of atmosphere, buildup, and *humanity* for lack of a better term - but Umineko's whodunnit tale (which, I think, has a tendency of being WAY more batshit than Higu) is pretty interesting in its own right. It depends on which of the two intrigues you more.
IMO, I'd say go for Higu. Ch.1 is still free for grabs on Steam, so you've nothing to lose. (Just play with the Original sprites, I beg you.)

While I adore Umineko (the music in particular), Higurashi gets the higher recommendation if you're choosing between them.

Well I was once in the same boat as you and I ended up choosing Umineko because I though it was going to be some yakuza crime drama.
