GameDev: Kickstarter or Patreon?

| I really don't know how to ask this, or where to start. I'm considering making my game public and also help its development quota, time invested and quality. Maybe it could even help me to hire people.

Is any of these two options a good choice? Any other option would be better?
Should I not do this and keep developing my project on my free time and hope one day I'll finish it?

| If it helps kirin has mentioned doing a patreon. But that only works if you have clout. So unless you're a YouTube personality or making porn maybe not patreon.

If you're game has some memetic quality or there have been successful games similar to yours on kickstarter go for it. Though it'll be very depresso if you get like 10% of your asking price.

When you're gonna monetize like that you have to have some sort of internet presence, or just get unrealistically lucky.

| Chaturbate

| You can try getting approved for steam early access depending on how far into development you are.
Otherwise patreon is a better choice than kickstarter nowadays for longer-term projects as subscriptions are recurring as long as you keep your patrons interested and deliver something, plus kickstarter got a worse reputation because of the absurd volume of scams that got through it.

| GoFundMe and Patreon are good because no refunds

| Patreon can be used as a monetary tip jar. Less pressure and you open yourself to the generosity of anyone at any time. As for Kickstarter, you're going to have to be ready to deliver a product you promise to your backers.

Steam Early Access doesn't provide fund to the developer. If anything, the dev pays to have their game on Steam.

And to op, you should ask your audience/the people already interested in the game instead of us. If they're in it for the long haul, Patreon is good. Do Kickstarter only if you have a solid plan already.

If you don't already have an audience you're doing this totally wrong.

| Kickstarter is difficult. Don't attempt until you've done research on those that have succeeded or failed before you.

May I ask what is the game about? Oh! and : What kind of game is? (Like metroidvania/souls-like/action-fps/farming/etc)
I'm kinda curious!

| >>768615 Well no I don't have any audience at all, I though by Patreon or Kickstarter I could help people to know about my game, any other option is a Twitter account, where I have no idea on how to spread the game without being spammy (which I don't want to) and a Youtube channel means fighting an algorithm.

>>768667 It's mainly a platformer with roguelite elements. Something like Mario or Sonic.

| >>768696 oh I see! I hope your game will be able to reach more people!

| You should post your game here OP. When you've got a page for it, at least. Let me know if you need website help. A simple press kit can go a long way.

Oh dear. If you don't have an audience yet, Patreon/Kickstarter will not help you at all.

Make social media accounts (or just use your personal account). Post gifs, post concept arts. Make a playable demo and put them on Itch or something. Join dev-centric hashtags (like #screenshotsaturday). Popular indie devs occasionally ask for works that they can boost; promote your game then. A press kit would help too.

And yeah, post your game here too, op!
