A couple of things to note: I'm not looking for a realistic sim. Nor do I want Call of Duty, the games have gotten way too big to install lately.
Just something along the lines of the Metal Gear series: fun video games that play around with the military/soldiers theme even at the cost of realism.

The first Call of Duties weren't as heavy and I remember their campaign being fun, to be fair I probably only remember the DS ones but I learned that DS games don't have the same story as the console counterparts. There is also Glory Days 2 on DS which is a really original type of game and I can't believe people don't talk about it anymore.
Medal of Honor Vanguard had a really good campaign. And there are two rts on PC that were really innovative but I can't remember their names.

>>744922 I just searched up Glory Days 2. G/u/rl, this looks fun!! I don't play games with jet fighters and tanks much but I'll gladly add it to my DS/3DS collection if I find it.

Uhh... Advance Wars? Pretty sure that's not what you're looking for, but it's VERY fun, plays around with the military/soldiers theme somewhat, realism gets thrown out the window immediately. Well, other than Days of Ruin, that one is more realistic (to a degree), gritty and military-inclined.
Also Valkyria Chronicles, early WWII-ish military theme with *some* fantasy elements. The first game gets a lot more fantasy around the second half though, not sure about others.

Squad if you like coop with other people. Eventually Project Reality which is same game made by same people, and it's free, except PR is standalone mod for BF2, so keep that in mind.

>>745010 Well, things get interesting in VC4. Nuclear power does exist, and is present in something... Unusual, let's say.
Anyways. Company of Heroes. Goliaths go vroom vroom then boom.

>>745081 Hey, since you're a fan of VC, Final Fantasy Type-0 might also be up you alley. A class of elite students from a magical academy gets mobilized when a major conflict unfolds, and while it might sound like it would just be typical anime school bullshit, themes of war and death are *very* prominent. Game is fun too.
Unrelated, but also maybe check out Iron Harvest, a Polish dieselpunk RTS with a lot of wacky (but cool) mechs.
