"explore a vast world"
| These huge open worlds tend to spread themselves thin. It's why I like the condenses worlds of Deus Ex, Yakuza, etc. More interesting things within walking distance.
| Yeah, for real. Open world can be a lot of fun. I love BotW on how you can explore the map for, like, 100+ hours and still find new and fun stuff, but getting to really know smaller, denser, highly detailed and possibly changing areas would be really nice now. As other anon said, Deus Ex and Yakuza are great examples. Even something with world design like Dark Souls would be really nice. I just want open games that aren't super big, but rather just really cool and interesting.
