I feel like I understood lives in Mario when I played SMB3. Like the game is designed around repetition, not solely in "trial and error leading to a greater satisfaction/mastery" way but also a sort of way that feel like the game is strong arming you into hunting for secrets, trying alternate routes and maybe possibility getting gud at the over-world/ end screen slot mini-games. This is defo true in World, but I guess the on avg shorter stage length highlighted it.
