(Also fuck the American healthcare system for charging like $3000 for an ER visit when the condition turned out to not even require any treatment. Still.)

I'm in the same boat as you, and I live in one of those northern countries where you're not supposed to lose all your wealth if you become sick but the system is broken. If anyone in the gov fucks up or misbehaves your only shot at justice is taking it to court and risk even more debt.
It kills the soul and the will to live. I used to adore and love this country but lately... it's turning into little America. Corruption and greed is taking over.

I know there are ways to lower the price on the bill in the US like asking for the bill to be itemised and stuff like that.

>>ffe7ce If you’re not able to afford the bill, talk to the medical care provider. Nonprofit hospitals are required by law to offer financial assistance programs, and many other providers are willing to work out payment arrangements. Contact your state or local social services to see if more help is available.

I'm not american and I go by memory of random stuff I've read or seen but I think I covered all I could remember with these links. There may be way for you to lower the bill so don't lose hope.
If you can't afford to pay the bill, the hospital is legally required to pay your bill for you. Here's the imgur link where I first learned about this: https://imgur.com/gallery/3TYluGI
Fuck the system! But everything is gonna turn out alright, just remember that.

I'm in a similar boat as you, I skipped bills because I was too sick/exhausted and now they're huge. I wish I wasn't such an ADHD-riddled airhead who can't articulate my thoughts well enough for my sincerity and empathy to come trough, but I want to stress that even though I'm socially brainrotten I'm here for you and I empathise with what you're going trough.
I hope it'll work out for you. Make sure to read the URLs I posted, k?

Every time an American price shows up I need to remind myself to cut to a quarter of it after changing the currency to account for living cost, and I *still* balk at your healthcare costs.
The last time I needed medical care (it was dental, not insured), I only had to pay, like twenty dollars.

The system is well and truly fucked. I see a lot of people going to the ED via ambulance when they absolutely could have gone themselves, and I see people having the worst day of their lives hesitating any care due to costs. In the end, everyone gets fucked over, and every level of actual healthcare is too understaffed to handle it.
