It's a finite generated resource that you can consume to cause things to happen without you putting in effort. You can tap on your glowing rectangle in a way that causes food to appear at your doorstep, any other era would've called that magic.

You should try looking at some slow mo videos of lighting - it doesn't immediately travel the shortest path, it puts out feelers and then travels whichever makes it to ground first. Electricity is just doing this continuously, and since we can control the path of least resistance, we can control where it goes.
