As you alluded to, it depends on calories per meal and individual needs. Like, my sister eats 3 to better regulate her blood sugar. Healthy weight. My cousin eats like 6, because he trains like a maniac. Technically overweight, but low bodyfat. Me, I eat 1-2 because my medication supresses appetite and I have to force myself to eat. Underweight.
It's all calorie in - calorie out at the end of the day. Meal count is not so relevant if we're only considering bodyweight.

I recall hearing smaller meals more often promotes a faster metabolism, but have no idea how true it is.

Personally mine is all over the place. I shove something down my gullet in the morning and that is occasionally. Then usually I have a large dinner. I am still an overweight westerner. It's our food man. I could go into detail about how it is quite literally designed to be addictive,and fattening. Though I don't want to post 20+ replys.
