Is it bad if I don't care to really improve? In my mind around all art is equal, art is art. Sure some art is better at a mechanical level, but regardless at the end of the day in my mind it's about if you enjoy making your art with your style. Hyper realism isn't the end all be all. That said, I am also quite satisfied with my mechanical skill, sure it could be better, but it's good enough for me to accurately express whatever I want in my opinion and that's all that matters.

>Is it bad if I don't care to really improve? it depends. > it's good enough for me to accurately express whatever I want in my opinion See, this part is wrong. Your opinion doesn't really matter here, your audience's opinion matters, because they're the ones interpreting your expression. If you're satisfied with your art for yourself that's fine, but if you're actually trying to express something in a meaningful way, you need to be mindful of the person viewing the art.

>>839548 See, this part is wrong. That's bullshit. Because self-expression is not about appealing to others. So if you're using art as a form of self-expression then others opinions don't mean shit. If you're doing it for the sole purpose of appealing to as many people as possible, then sure. But if you're making art purely for yourself for the purposes of self-expression then your opinion is the only one that matters.

>>839572 This is how I approach the subject of self-expression as well. I get why one would think external validation of your expression might determine it's worth, but I just don't think it makes sense.

Personally I find a lot of satisfaction in growing my so-called mechanical skill. I think the line between artistic and mechanical skill is very blurry.
For example, I learned the very mechanical/technical skills of figure drawing, 3D sculpting, composition, compositing, lighting, and texturing before I finally got to the artistic skill of high-poly character modeling.

>>839572 That's why I said >If you're satisfied with your art for yourself before that. Qualifiers are important.

>Is it bad I don’t care to really improve? Improvement leads to better self expression, if you’re at a level you can create anything that comes to mind, sure I would argue you’re fine. But if there’s ever a time where you find yourself unable to establish an idea; then I would say yes, you should aim for improvement.
