I want to pick up a new hobby/study based on learning a new language. Leaning towards Russian, what would be the best method to self teach, just books? Anyone who’s learned a language recently please share your experience. <3

This tip might not be relevant of you're just starting out but: You NEED to have a way to experience the language outside of consciously studying it. Watching TV/movie/videos in it, even subbed, or reading books/social media posts in it, would help. Otherwise you WILL get rusty quickly.

As for starting out, there's plenty of resource on the internet, enough to self-teach, if you're persistent and can make plans on your own. I don't know anything for Russian specifically, though.
Generally, for most language, I find Duolingo to be a decent place for some introduction and guidance in making lesson plans, but it's definitely not enough on its own.

Earthlingo is a fun(?) game to build basic vocab. HelloTalk or Tandem are good apps for making language partners. People like Anki for making flashcards but it's not my thing

Get a lover that has that language as their native language and have them teach you. Also gonna reiterate on what >>830515 said, you need to do listening practice if you wish to have conversations in that language. Without it, you won't be able to recognise the words you know when listening to someone speak.

Having friends that are also interested and willing to learn the language can help you stay motivated
