Solitude is being alone by your own choice, because you like it and it makes you feel good. Whoever chooses solitude, does so to take time for himself, either to think, to put his thoughts in order or simply to appreciate his own presence. Loneliness is quite different. In loneliness you are not alone by choice but by circumstances, and being alone in this situation makes you feel sad.
