I haven't really been in a relationship but I would guess it has to do with how if you don't feel you're good enough you're going to become jealous and insecure. Also taking care of yourself first is important, or you'll end up dragging your partner down. Seems kinda obvious to me.

I mean, speaking from personal experience, I think you can still love others without loving yourself.
I fucking loathe myself, and I feel like I love others harder because of it. I have too much love to give, just not for myself
