Would you rather be Jack of all trades or Master of few?

| You decide.
I'm not sure myself

| The 80-20 rule is that you can only recall 80% of a skill that you have learned. Therefore, it is best to be a jack of all trades than master a few.
Unrelated: I'm horny.

| I'd rather be master of few since that can let me hone some skills more than others

| As a jack of all trades, it is better to be a master of few.

| Being a jack of all trades seems to be less boring in the long run
But a master of few will get you a comfy stable position
So I think it all boils down to this question "are you more afraid of boredom or unpredictability?"

| Eh, "master of few" nowadays are called "autist" anyways

| >>596202 the 80-20 rule is
>it takes 20% of the time to do 80% of the work and the other 80% of the time to do the other20% of the work
meaning, get the easy, menial shit out of the way first.

| How many is a few to you?

I could have mastery in sexy moves combined with horse racing, and more!

| i would rather master living an actually good life than being jack of all those shitty trades i have learned

| Jack of all trades.

| Yorozuya

| I feel like I'm kind of a combination, so I'm not sure. Like, I'm pretty decent at most things, and while I'm especially good at certain things I wouldn't necessarily say master. So I'm basically just a completely normal person who is having a hard time answering your question.

| You should call this thread are going to the university or a college.

| Master of few, that's why I'm doing my master's degree. I just want to do what I love and be the best at it. I was, once, a jack of all trade in search for things to master. It's good to have wide knowledge but you need a least one you master.

| >>596197 that's like saying more or less. And since we are all selfish organisms why would anyone say less ?

| >>596202 breth3ren why dont you come back to /d/ ? we are few and dying... I'm sure the fam would love to here about ur little brother down there too

| Society is set up in a way to incentive being specialised, and you all are already just maybe not to the same degree as a "master of few", see not everyone knows how to fix a car, build a computer, wire a house, fly a plane; to be a jack of all trades means you need to learn all of those but you'll never have enough time to ever be good at any, but a master of few can hone their craft and become world renown as exceptional in one or two areas

| >>596427 Actually the need for jacks of all trades has increased in recent times. Many jobs have become so complex and intertwined with other jobs that specialising on just one thing just isn't enough anymore. The ability to perform well enough in many different disciplines to combine them into new ideas or techniques is much rarer and more powerful than mastering a single task to it's limits.

| Once you are specialized, you can't "unspecialize".
The phrasing "Jack of all trades" does not judge ability.
You can most definitely be a Jack of all trades, with mastery in specific domains, or even all.
Just remember that whatever you do, never elevate mastery to a purpose.
Mastery is not a finality.
Mastery is not absolute.
It is testimony of the pursuit of a purpose.
It is what's left of this part of you after the process.

| Well the whole phrase is "Jack of all trades, master of none, but still better than a master of one"

but if you were going to hire an investment broker would you want someone who's nearly a master at their craft or the guy who just learned what to do

In most cases today we want specialised people not someone who tries to learn as many disciplines as possible, your surgeon doesn't need to know how to build a house, and you wouldn't want your general doc to do open heart surgery

| Senmonka

| More like a master of none

| I'd rather be really good in one thing and be decent with multiple other topics. So kind of both but have one real good trade I could fall back on.

| Be a master of only three:
Programming, AI and robotics
So you can make robots that are the masters of everything else

| >>596578
That's next level.

| >>596570 I have good news, that's basically what people do in reality! One craft they do for work and most people have some other hobbies
