There were tons of working furniture in there. Also with free furniture he can sell them for any price he wants like for example if he was always 50% off people would've gone to his store instead of the competition.

The real problem comes from time traveling stuff... So this guy could have just gotten greedy over a similar idea. You can see him acting all friendly with the thing.
Idk, I think the whole backrooms thing mutated beyond it's original scope anyways.
