first, prepare your sulfuric acid.
for this, you need teflon apparatus. you'll need teflon apparatus later. buy some and construct a jacketed reactor (nilered shows how to do this). you'll also need a temp probe inside it and condenser attached.
to this apparatus add sulfuric acid. 38% is common in lead/acid batteries. you need to gradually evaporate the water: do not go above 80 degrees centigrade.
| if you have a vacuum pump, use it: the process is faster (and safer) at lower temps, and lower pressure means lower boiling points.
continue until the distillate has slightly less than half the volume of the input acid. this should get you to 90%-ish. set the end product aside and clean your glassware well.
now, reassemble the jacketed reactor. you need two gas lines attached to it: the reactant gas source and your inert gas purge.
| inside the reactor you further need two electrodes: one iridium oxide on titanium, second nickel foam or platinum or titanium. this will be expensive. connect these electrodes to a dc power supply. you may insert your 90% acid into the reactor now. be sure both electrodes are submerged. you will also want a temp probe around, hopefully the one you used earlier is acid-resistant.
| ideally, you would run a polarization curve at this step (sweep potential between 0.5 to 2 volts, measure current density vs applied voltage). if you slam it as hard as the electrodes can take it, you'll likely run into mass transfer limitations. wastes current, nobody cares, slam it as far as the electrodes can take it.
| either way, you will want to flow inert gas through the system for 30ish minutes while running a low voltage current to stabilize the electrodes before proceeding further.
now you are ready to begin flowing nitrous oxide through the headspace of the reactor. slowly ramp up gas flow. the gas flow directly correlates to how much heat you're generating.
| how you cool the reactor is up to you- chilled glycol can be nice- but if you don't do it, you'll have thermal runaway, same as you would've with the sulfuric acid. don't have thermal runaways.
this process also produces hydrogen. might want to capture it. burn it. you'll need a fume hood anyway so might as well use it.
after a lot of redox bullshit, your dominant product is nitric acid. enjoy the fruits by nitrating toluene thrice
