I actually don't think the Discord age verification thing is that bad
I mean it could be, but I agree with the purpose of it which is to prevent 12 year olds from becoming gooning gremlins or caught up in cp rings.
If the actual processing of identity is contracted out to a third-party (especially where government IDs are involved) and that third-party is secure. If Discord's process isn't like that, then yeah it's a problem from an infosec perspective.

I'm pretty sure Discord's actual motivation in doing this, beyond any specific regulations requiring them to, is to reduce their liability for CSAM and child protection issues. Yeah it sucks, but they're literally providing basically unlimited free image and file sharing, it kinda needs to be that way to work as a centralized thing that doesn't get sued or prosecuted to oblivion.
The alternative is to run a decentralized system like IRC or XMPP which I also fully support :)

maybe if something good comes from it, itll be the fact that its pushing people towards more secure messaging platforms

I agree op. Someone needs to do the first step. Social networks now is what cocaine in coke was in the past. Internet for children needs to be regulated because it is a drug. I fried my dopamine circuitry and traumatized myself by watching raw Mexican cartel execution videos when I was twelve. Internet is bad.

However internet is bad not just for children. It is bad for everyone. So, instead of aGe vEriFiCatIon crap I propose nuking discord data centers.
