Question: Are there any good essays/etc from smart left-wing thinkers about what distinguishes fascism from "normal" right-wing politics?

The academic literature on fascism often describes it in abstract terms that could feasibly be applied to a large swathe of mainstream conservatism.

I personally distinguish between the following three kind of right-wingers

moderate/smart conservatives Most successful(/frustrating) to deal with (for) leftists. They understand at least that they need to make SOME concessions to leftist (liberal, progressive or even revolutionary) movements in order to keep the status quo. So they change some stuff to "conserve" others. Their rule is often based on the good old carrot and stick and divide and conquer methods.

dogmatic/dumb conservatives a.k.a. "the stagnators" (left-wingers favourites): >Everything is fine as it is (if not, it's your fault) because it was always like this and will always be (and never should be different) Our reign is destined by nature/god/any-other-supernatural-power. Wait whats this? Oh sh*t a revolutionary mob is going to lynch us...

Fascists They use some revolutionary methods and even rethorics but their ideals are ALWAYS backwarded. They're ideologically very heterogenous, simplistic and "flexible" (one could also say arbitrary or random). They may talk lots about honor and righteousness but in the end they know no morale but "the law of the jungle". >We are in power because we have the power or >we are in the right and as soon we are in power we will make everyone understand why.

Fascists pt 2/2 Their unity is built around a vague enemy portrayal (often but not necessarily something with jews. And they idealize/romantize the past. (the good old times) Their leaders care primariliy about their power while their henchmen are dumb and believe in the most absurd shit one could imagine, as long it is staged well. They're the most serious threat for leftists - but also for anyone else who fits in their (mostly random) enemy schemes (even for other fascists)

>>932655 Fascists use popular/mass compatible (=mainstream) conservative views to come into power. A main difference is that they want power to oppress any opposition to those views by force and don't give a damn about constitutions or elections. They only play by the rules as long it increases their power. Different than moderate conservatives fascists are unable to deal with criticism and they'll never question themselves.
