haibane renmei continues to suck and here's why

| "罪" getting translated as "sin" is very unfortunate and has caused a lot of western viewers to wildly misinterpret the story. The term is a fair bit broader and less theological in Japanese. You might consider substituting it for "guilt" to get something slightly closer to the original meaning.
| Think about it. Is the story *really* Christian? In Christian theology sin is generally viewed as a form of alienation from God, and yet God is barely mentioned and has no actual presence in the story. When Kuu (and later Reki) pass on, it isn't God's will or forgiveness, it's entirely down to their experiences and interactions with other haibane.
| You might also note that the dialogue between Rakka and Washi in episode nine makes very explicit that whatever happened before they died has no relevance to their current life, and they aren't responsible for anything they did then. The "circle of sin" is more of a state of mind rather than an external moral judgement.
| Guri is clearly an afterlife, but it doesn't fit into the Biblical cosmology because it explicitly is not any type of reward or punishment. It has far more in common with the Buddhist afterlives, which are simply transient places your soul passes through for a time. Similarly, "sin" in Haibane Renmei has less in common with Christian sin, and more in common with Buddhist conceptions of attachment.
| As for the setting, yes, it has several little homages to Hard-Boiled Wonderland, but they're really just aesthetic. What is shared between the settings is used differently and has different significance to the story, and there's a lot that's unique to Haibane Renmei. You might note that Hard-Boiled Wonderland itself is similarly based on The Castle by Franz Kafka. If you were hoping for a direct adaptation of Hard-Boiled Wonderland then I can see how you'd be disappointed, though.
| Fundamentally, Haibane Renmei isn't about religion or about the Murakami novel it's loosely based on. It's about trauma and grief and abandonment, and to people who have experienced these things, it can be a very sensitive and touching portrayal of a sort that we don't often get. If you cannot relate to it that way then, honestly, that's probably for the best. Just try not to be too dismissive towards those who do.

you carry no sin. sin is a judeo-christian concept designed as a cudgel against people the clerics didn't like. sin has nothing to do with reconciliation with the inner self and honestly besides the setting (which was objectively ripped) you shouldn't claim the book has anything to do with the anime
