Computer or Laptop recommendation

| I don't know much at all about computers or laptops but I really want one for general use since they can be really useful and open up more doors to everything than just a phone and such...But again idk what to look for in buying one or if there are any good laptops just to get me started in using them. I also don't know where to look for advice on things concerning them so I came here since I like this place and people seem nice and helpful.. at times.

| Thinkpad t480/x280, if you have enough money. After purchase immediately install a usb-c controller patch from the official lenovo website.
Thinkpad p50, if you need a workstation or be able to play games.
Any older t- or x- series thinkpad if you are on a budget, just make sure it has an ips display; w520 if you need a cheap workstation.

Elitebooks or Latitudes are okay too. Common consumer laptops are shit. Old semi-decent macbooks are old and inferior to the old thiccpads.

| >>169d7c Oh wow okay! I'll look into it. Thank you for your recommendation. I'd still like to hear more recommendations or even be informed on anything I'd need to know about.

| All you need to know is the superiority of business laptops over every other laptop class. Thinkpads are memetic for a reason. Reliability, ease of maintenance and (older models) upgrade. Look it up.

| >>639668 +1 TPs are the best lineup of laptops. Even the older models are WAAY more resilient than whatever manufacturers are pumping out now.

| Avoid Thinkpad Tx40 or any other with 4th gen intel. They're worse than ideapads

What's wrong with them? Other than the trackpad issue.

| I have a T420 as my main laptop and still going strong. If they were to fall off and I had to buy a new one, it would be T480, the last genuine thinkpad.

>I don't know much at all about computers or laptops
Just like most people, which is totally ok.
>but I really want one for general use
Just like most people, which makes them perfect v̶i̶c̶t̶i̶m̶s̶ targets for b̶e̶g̶u̶i̶l̶e̶r̶s̶ marketing strategists.

Get rid of the ideas like:
- beeing able to "general use" something you don't know much about.
- money as a guarantor/indicator for success/quality
- intelligence beats diligence

| Before you start computing I'd recommend to read and understand the following articles:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Functional_design
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modular_design
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Von_Neumann_architecture
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPO_model
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_Philosophy

The best Laptop/PC you can get is one for free, e.g. on classified advertising platforms - Well, at least make sure it has a "x86-64 architecture"

| >>3c9ddd Thank you for the advice. I'll look into the links. It's true that i'm probably easy prey for certain people. I don't get the difference between x-470, x-460, t-480 or whatever numbers and letters are used and such and that's probably bad if i'm trying to see what I would want to get. Thank you all again. I would still like anymore advice or recommendations.

| I own a Lenovo ThinkPad T450. No issues yet. I don't use it to run games though, so if you're looking for a really rad and powerful gaming PC or smthn, idk if it'll be right for you. I have a desktop to play all my games on.

| >>9a1f49 Not really going for the gaming aspect though that would be nice. Idk what i'm really looking for but I know you can do so much with it all. I guess what I can do with it like programs and such makes me excited to explore. It just interests me to look into it but I know regular laptops suck so that's why i'm asking for advice on what to look for to get me started and be reliable.

| Thinkpad T410. There are plenty of tutorials on youtube about how to upgrade it. Slap 8 gigs of ram + a $20 ssd on it, a windows 7 modified version (win 7 miniOs) for games + ubuntu MATE for work/study, and you're good to go

| Also, maybe you could give us a budget so we can figure out better what fits u?

| >>9b4fc6 I would say I could spend around $750-$1000. Though I would prefer it to be closer to $750. I could also just wait a bit longer so I can save for money.
