So... Microsoft taking over GitHub.

How does /tech/ feel?

| I really don't think the Github product owners would sell it. If they do, RIP. Moving to GitLab

| Can't wait to have Azure Cloud shit showed down my throat. Oddly enough they'll also be in charge of all the major soyboy nu-male electron code editors, VSCode and Atom.

| >>304237 what's the problem with atom?

| Press F to pay respect, another brave warrior fell

| I'll believe it when GitHub acknowledges it

| There's always bitbucket

| NO GOD PLEEASE NO

| Goodbye free and open internet, it was nice while it lasted

| Please no. :(

| >>304246
It uses insane amounts of memory, is painfully slow, and does not have a terminal operating mode. It furthermore lacks a modal editing mode like Vim. The kind of users who use it are overwhelmingly pseudo programmers who call themselves "devs" or even more misleading "engineers" who singlehandedly are responsible for bloated web applications. It pains me that people don't spend the time to look for the best tools possible and instead settle for flashy bullshit.

| >>304246 basically everyone just hates people who write JavaScript. Don't mind the haters and just use the tools that work for you

| "you was needed to destroy evil, not become it."

| >>305240
Pretentious too much?

| >>305240 What do you recommend?

| >>305240 this guy, my friends, is what we call "fucking annoying".

For real though just use what you want to use and don't let anybody else tell you what to use. Do the research yourself, don't listen to these "intellectuals".

| >>305240 I use EDIT through dosbox how does that rate?

| >>305240 lmao thinking that the editor you use makes you not a dev. I bet you don't even know the advantages of alphabetically sorting filled hash tables. :^)

| >>305679 it depends on the hash algorithm tho

| >>305539 Why was he/she being annoying? Only expressed opinions about some piece of software which actually does suck big when it comes to resource use. And surely had a point regarding all the kids out there who like to call themselves engineers just because they installed themselves an IDE. We all have seen swarms of that breed of engineers.

| >>305539
I don't get why it's so hard to understand, why "everyone should use what suits to him" doesn't work in a environment that is more and more dominated by proprietary monopolies.
Companies like Microsoft want to take away the freedom of choice from people, as they want them to use their products. This is all what the software-market is about.
Everytime proprietary fans say: "huh, if you don't like it, don't use it" it's like a punch of ignorance straight into the face.

| >>305763 stallman itt

| >>305763 well, that's because of this ignorance that we say that. Most people don't care about monopoly and stuff like that, why should we insist? That's why "everyone should use what suits to him", if being a donkey suits him, why not?

| rippp

| Oh shit it's not a rumour

| >>305870
>Most people don't care about monopoly and stuff like that
I would give a fuck about what most people want for themselves. The issue is that these people takeover away MY freedom by actively establishing monopolies with their proprietary standard. I'm afraid comming to a point where I am crimininalized for installing "unauthorized software" on the device I BOUGHT AND OWN. They already tried it with this UEFI shit on PC, and switching OS on "smart" devices is a hurdle run.

|

| >>306028
Soon:
"you own the device, but it is provided to you with a LICENSE to use software installed on it, and you cannot modify it. It's a free market of course, you can purchase the device itself... Unfortunately, nobody sells them alone"

| The real issue though - github was a company from the very beginning. If Terms of Service don't change, I suppose the only shift would be software for Windows showing up more often.

| Paranoid bastards.

| >>307433
Care to elaborate as to why we're paranoid? The post before you linked Microsofts old and malicious technique for taking over technology ("EEE"). It's very real. They even got sued for it by the US Government once. Microsoft is merely less obvious about it now as they were in earlier days. I'd argue they're much more dangerous now than they used to be by how people are actually trusting them for some reason.

| >>306872 "During the browser wars, other companies besides Microsoft introduced proprietary, non-standards-compliant extensions. For example, in 1995, Netscape implemented the "font" tag, among other HTML extensions, without seeking review from a standards body. With the rise of Internet Explorer, the two companies became locked in a dead heat to out-implement each other with non-standards-compliant features...

| ... In 2004, to prevent a repeat of the "browser wars", and the resulting morass of conflicting standards, the browser vendors Apple Inc. (Safari), Mozilla Foundation (Firefox), Google Inc. (Google Chrome) and Opera Software (Opera browser) formed the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG) to create open standards to complement those of the World Wide Web Consortium. Microsoft refused to join, citing the group's lack of a patent policy as the reason"

| Why can't we have nice things Microsoft

| "We believe in open-source."

Really, Microsoft? So is it okay if I use the GitHub platform to collaborate on some creations that can potentially threaten your market share in the industry? No? Didn't fucking think so.

| Install linux, problem solved xD

| >>308259 nice link. Also the link to Twitter at the end made me laugh

| I will be moving from GitHub. I just don't trust Microsoft with security or trying to make a "money machine" out of it. Microsoft and open source, that's a joke. However, I already mainly use Keybase as it encrypted, so it doesn't effect me directly.

| I think this guy is serious. His Twitter is either completely serious or a poe.

| >>305240 well, computers nowadays have insane amounts of memory.

| >>308869
They sure do if you pay insane amounts of money for them.

| >>309118
1. 8 GB is standard nowadays and atom don't nearly use 1/8 of it
2. the excess ram are gonna be wasted anyway unless you're opening 50 tabs of stack overflow at the same time (whut)
3. even if you cut down on ram, typical usage of 64-bit windows pc will lag on merely 4 GB ram, so back to point 1 and 2
4. 8 GB isn't that expensive wtf

| well i guess if you take the current ram price increase you do have a point. thankfully i bought mine 2 years ago and they're working just fine

| >>308841 the dude's 100% serious, he blocks threads that triggers him

| he >woke

| > #resist

| Atom sucks so much it uses so much resources yadda yadda why wouldn't others use vim like I do yadda yadda

Well, maybe because I value my own brain more than my RAM and don't like cluttering it with memorized knowledge on how to use vim efficiently enough? Seriously, I used this shit and found that to get an edge over npp, atom or even fucking nano you need to memorize A LOT.

| >>310313
Maybe if you were'nt a brainlet you'd memorize it automatically, through practice. What's that called again, Learning?

I picked up Vim one day and haven't looked back since. After reading through the Vim tutor I was practically set to go, with an occasional look through the manual if I'd forgotten how to do something.

| >>310487
Typo: weren't*

| >>310313
>literally admitting to being a brainlet
>notepad++
If you just use an editor to change some minecraft configs then you're probably fine using a basic editor. But if you're doing actual programming there's no excuse for not learning powerful tools. Employers certainly don't like unwillingness to learn just because something involves "memorizing". Vims modal editing is objectively faster than handicapped editors where you have to use the arrow keys and mouse.

| Wow, this conversation keeps getting derailed by textfags

| >>310663
t. sublimefag

| Atom is the best Notepad++ Vim editor for the Sublime Environmemt on Windows Linux Mac.
