I usually play music from youtube on Chrome while gaming/working but that RAM usage can really slow down my computer. Any good program alternatives or should I just not use Chrome.

You can play internet radio, including radi/u/, in vlc or other media players. If you're on Linux there are command line YouTube clients too

Actually VLC works fine to play youtube videos if you get a version above 2 (so 3.x.x or 4.x.x). Just put the Youtube url in the open network url (crtl-n) dialog.
