Currently I have a T42 for Windows 98 & XP gaming and a T540p which I'm upgrading for modern linux usage i.e. programming, documentation, general browsing.

I've only ever had one thinkpad, an X200 (librebooted). I own it for about five years now, and overall I don't have any particular complaints, except for the battery life. Surprisingly core 2 duo is more than okay for everyday tasks such as watching videos on invidious, chatting on messengers, writing shell scripts in vim, net surfing, torrenting, and even games (if you play minecraft on older versions and with minimal settings / old touhous)

The TN matrix sucks a little, but the 12.1-inch screen is surprisingly enough for work (until you open an excel spreadsheet of course)
If I were buying a new laptop, I would like to try the T480s, and maybe something classic like the X40 just for the understanding what classic thinkpads were in the IBM era.

And answering the question in the title, my favorite would probably be from what I know about thinkpads in general - the X230. Better battery life, power, IPS screen, still portable, and USB 3.0. And I don't really care about a classic keyboard (although I haven't tried typing on the new ones, so I can't be sure. In any case, there is a mod that allows you to replace it).
