I know that xmpp exists, and I even have it, but the main problem is: how can I drag all of my friends there? considering that all of them will need an acc, this feels like mission impossible.

>>1073420 >how can I drag all of my friends there? It's not up to you or your friends. It would be the job for the government, especially their anti-trust authorities to deal with this. But public bureaucracy and law are stuck somwhere in the 1980s/1990s and politics has become more corrupt then ever everywhere.

>>1073440 I've never heard of it, but it looks like a good alternative, god bless you g/u/rl. Most likely, I'll have to tell all my friends, “haha sorry but probably you'll have to download tox if you want to contact me,” but that's better than telling them to set up their own XMPP server

>>1073450 there's better and worse. it seems a huge curse of secure communication is assholes always feel the need to create ANOTHER "secure, private, anon etc etc wah wah" comms method and we end up with dozens of them while none are any good. i could have added ricochet, briar, and maybe maybe session (am unfagmiliar) in the honorable mentions but each have annoying downsides too: ricochet has a stupid name, briar is tedious on desktop and session just has a bad vibe about it.

so, i went with tox in the recco. for a few reasons: 1. simplicity. you have single-binary download which you run, it gives you the opportunity to pick a passwd for the profile data but otherwise just put nickname and that's it. then you need your frens' code (a weak point, since you absolutely need it and it's long i guess) 2. open source 3. many platforms 4. reasonably featured: groups, video/audio calls. group titles. bots. proxy compatible. and few other things i liked.
Post number #1073462, ID: da5f60

NOW i will proceed to list the downsides... so you better listen up! 1. IP leak by design. tox protocol inherently makes zero attempt to hide your IP in any way. it is p2p, so it shouldn't be too much of a surprise. i used to fantasize that it uses DHT and as such might not require it, but i guess i don't know shit at all after all. throwing the traffic through a proxy/vpn is a simple task (in the options)

2. there used to be a vulnerability exploiting UDP: you can disable UDP in the settings. 3. slow. takes a long time to power up and get going. it has to connect or whatever. peers or some shit. idk. 4. no globally organized frens advertisement service! there used to be toxme but it got shutdown by the feds (after they threw in the towel because it was too secure maybe?) leading us to the obligatory: 5. creeps.
Post number #1073464, ID: da5f60
|
6. a lot of the projects are abandoned, receive few updates, or are otherwise unpopulated. because 7. not a lot of people on tox. 8. dumb and not very unique name (but some people are dumb enough to call their stuff session, signal and yggdrasil — nice search results retard) 9. and yeah lack of features. no group file sharing capacity. you have to share to one person. only. eh 10. updating can be annoying. you basically have to redownload versions every time, and YOU BETTER. CVEs!

>>1073462 oh right! 4. toxme.io is gone but now we have tox.directory. forgot about that one! so now you can launch tox, give tox.directory your ID and it posts it and you can also add other people too.

OP here (I use mobile internet so my ID will change a lot in this thread)
>create a thread >went to shower >mfw when came back and see a 10 posts rant
I dunno even what to add, but I shoud say thank you I guess? The info about CVE, vulnerabilities with UDP, and so on is useful (if I'll download tox tomorrow, I don't have cable internet at home, so I go to the library to avoid using up my mobile data blah blah blah)

as for the friends advertising service I gave up on making friends online a long time ago, so it's not a big deal for me (long live forums and anon textboards, sometimes you're all really cool g/u/rls. sometimes.)

and yeah my ID changed once again.
Update on the tox: I found it too ugly (at least the clients that were in F-droid), so I'll try to stick up with briar, especially since I already had experience with it in the past
and if you ignore the confusing UI part, I was pretty satisfied with it.

>>1073519 aww don't be so sad gurl, you can always find us here. tl;dr briar is mostly the same as tox, (P2P, encrypted, you can route all traffic through tor, blah blah blah). the only problem I heard about it is the fact that since it's a P2P app, it should work all the time in the background, so it drains battery. and another one I personally encountered is not the best UI/UX.
Post number #1073527, ID: 3a111e

no, i won't be using briar. it forces you to put a password on your files and that's fucking stupid. I WILL NOT BE FORCED, ASSHOLE

>>1073450 One doesn't need to set up his own xmpp server to use xmpp. You could provide your own server and let them register. The only things you should expect from your friends is the same you should expect from then to communicate via email or sms: - Get a device - register to a service provider - install an set up a client - and now the most complicated but necessary part, that matters: set up a keypair and exchange the public keys.
Post number #1073637, ID: 6160be

Talking about email: There is also "DeltaChat", a messenger App for Dekstop and mobile devices, that uses the email protocols (imap&smtp + using autocrypt) Most "normal users" already have an emailadress. No need to register.
And if you concerned about metadata collection (connect/reconnect timestamps) by the service providers there are technically so many other listeners that it really doesn't make a difference to self hosting (e.g. dns).

OP here, with a new update.
If anyone was wondering how things are going for me, I successfully created a Briar account and have already converted one of about five friends (the rest are already on XMPP or other alternatives) Soo in general everything is going smoothly. I'm probably gonna export some chats and maybe, just maybe EVEN delete my tg acc
Post number #1073737, ID: 757918

(The chances are pretty slim, though, I'm too scared to explain to my parents why I decided to delete my main and mostly the only messenger and communication tool for them with me)

If anyone has questions about why I don't give Jabber accounts to all my friends, tl;dr: I don't have my own server yet (in fact, my XMPP account is already hosted on one of my friend's server, and asking him to make another 5-6 accounts is way too bold in my opinion)

>>1073737 >I'm too scared to explain to my parents why I decided to delete my main and mostly the only messenger and communication tool for them with me Who sets up and fixes your parents devices and helps them if they have technical problems? My policy is (in general): If I'm called to solve technical problems of friends or family members, its up to me to decide which tools they use. If a technical problem wasn't solved tool-agnostic, the problem wasn't really solved.
