How to get into classical music?

| As someone who has had the sort of cynical "Fetishize the old classic greats to get 100+ IQ" View of it.
What are tracks you recommend me to start out with?
I think the closest I've gotten to liking it was with the Hyper Light Drifter ost, which apparently has a lot of impressionist influence.

| lacrimosa is pretty good

| I credit Erik Satie - Gymnopédie No.1, Claude Debussy - Moonlight and Pachelbel - Canon In D Major for getting me into classical music at a young age.

I also recommend Gustav Holsts pieces about the planets. Or more especially, Jupiter and Mars. Those two influenced many soundtracks including Star Wars Imperial March and the Shadow of the Colossus OST.

| Other than that I recommend listening to a few "best of"-compilations to see if any of the composers sticks with you.

Some of it may sound like noise at first, and it's important not to force yourself. You don't have to like everything. I don't get Mozart, for example. But if there's something you like even a little bit I think you should give it another spin some time later. This is how I started appreciating Tchaikovsky after initially disliking him for years.

| >>7c08fd has a genuinely good view of things. Erik Satie is an excellent composer (experimental, at his time), and the Gymnopedie series are astounding. I also recommend the Gnossienne compositions. If I remember right, they were used in the movie Chocolat.

Back to gaming, you can find a wealth of quality classical composition in Dark Souls (particularly 3), and Dragon Quest 8, notable for being one of the first games to feature a high-profile orchestra for the entire soundtrack.

| I'd also recommend Moon Remix RPG (where you can hear one of my favorite Debussey pieces, Clair de Lune), and naturally the works of Nobuo Uematsu in Final Fantasy. Hearing those compositions performed by an orchestra helps establish those classical inspirations.
