i find it very interesting when a band gets a very strong cult following but never manages to break the barriers and become popular outside their home country.
one example: camela, europop trio (with spanish folk influences) from the 90s. started selling self released tapes at gas stations. critics and intellectuals regarded the music as trash. but eventually they got very big

there's a danish band called "Red Warszawa", pretty well known within borders. they mostly do joke heavy metal songs such as "Children are stupid and ugly" and "I don't like people with glasses". they're a decent listen
